David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

Now this is amazing.

The Greensboro Economic Development Partnership has put up a property locator on their website.  Designed to give new or expanding businesses a resource to identify available parcels, its capabilities are nothing short of miraculous.

I typed in my address here and told it what kind of information to provide... and voila... instant demographics within whatever radius I stipulate.

Among other things I discovered is that out of a total population of 9,268 people who live within one mile of my house, 8,325 of them are considered to be part of Greensboro's work force.  Of that number, 3,076 of them are not just unemployed (that's 1,507) - but they are "not in workforce".

Also, only 86 of neighboring households have a net worth in excess of $500,000..

In other words, it shows that times are tough all around me.

The N&R has added an "Election 2004" section to their home page.  They have also put up a page of links to election related sites of national, statewide and local interest.

I wish they would take the next step and provide a page of available links to candidate websites/weblogs.  They provided them for Kerry and Bush, Democrats and Republicans at the bottom of the election section but nothing for Libertarians nor Nadarians.

Perhaps the reason they don't link to candidates is demonstrated by the above paragraph.  Unless they post links to every candidate in a particular race - they might be accused of biased linking.

A war of well written words continues between two friends of mine in the comments section below my recent obligitory post on F 9/11.

One of the combatants is known to me to be a "progressive Democrat" (update that - independent) and has seen the movie, the other I would describe as moderate Republican and refuses to give Michael Moore his money.  Both are passionate and relate their views extremely well.

My Republican friend just pointed to a vernacular-ridden review of the movie by Filthy Critic that is worth a read.  We can expect a counter-link most anytime from my Democrat friend.

If I were to encounter a couple of lovers exhibiting their passion in public I would suggest that they get a room.  In the case of these two passionate (in an idealistic way) friends I say this, again:  Get a blog.

Listen in.
