The kids and I have been taking an annual backpacking trip up the Applachian Trail to Roan Mountain, TN for many years. We usually go on Father's Day weekend but it just didn't pan out this year. We've decided this weekend is it.

We go in completely self sufficient for a two night stay. In year's past - when the kids were smaller, it was a challenge because Dad had to carry more than his share of food and other necessities. This year every one will be carrying their own weight.
We start at Carver's Gap and pretty much follow the trail outlined in this account by Don Hyatt I found when searching for a suitable picture to show why we keep going back. No mere picture can do the area justice.
Jesse (10) is rearing to go. Jack (14) and Josie (13) are taking friends this year and I have been on the phone with both of their friends' parents making sure they know what their children are in for. Questions abound: Bathroom? - 20 miles Food? - whatever you pack in. Temperature? - Warm days - cold nights, even in the middle of July. Water? - There's a spring down the mountain from where we camp, about 100 yards - cold and tasty. Activities? -Explore and take it in. Medical emergency? - We'll do the best we can. Campfire? - Only if we gather scarce wood all day. Difficult? - You betcha.
See you Sunday night. Go with us next year.
