"The administration is taking us for superficial airheads. But we aren't. We are respectable young adults, who want to voice our opinion." - Aycock student
Over at the "No SMOD" website, which is the clearing house of anti school uniform activism for Aycock Middle School, they have sort of resigned themselves to the idea of conformity of dress. They are apparently not going to conform, however.
Aycock's new school uniform policy has been codified and sent out to all affected families. It is pretty comprehensive but leaves much room for interpretation and individuality - and exploitation.
The "No Smodders" have found a few loopholes that may be problematic for administrators, at least at the beginning of next school year if the policy is ultimately upheld by the school board. Among my favorites:
Editing note: The Nosmodders made the decision to take down the "let's get creative" portion of their website so as to keep the administration guessing. I will leave this partial list up.
- Guys: Wear skirts - go all the way! Cross Dress, stuff bras, put on makeup, maybe even a wig.
- Change the buttons on your shirts. Make them red or green, huge.
- Dye your skin! Take a bath in water with food coloring. Come to school with red, yellow, green, or blue tinted skin. You can't be sent home on grounds of skin color.
- Wear stickers and buttons: Anti-uniform ones, political ones, religious ones...
They're not kidding about the buttons, which are not mentioned in the uniform policy... yet... some ideas:
- And I thought Aycock was Supposed to be Diverse.....
- You can make me wear it but you can't make me like it.
- The rainbow: White, Khaki, Black
If the case for uniforms had been properly made, if opposition had been compromised with, and buy-in of the policy properly acheived, more students and their families might have given school uniforms a fair shot. From the looks of things though, the policy just might just create more trouble than whatever problems dressing people the same is supposed to solve.
