Bloggers build relationships online much like one would normally ascribe to back room online chat rooms. Except for the fact that we don't learn about each other's sexual dark sides (often) - we feel we know each other pretty well even though most of us have never met. Yesterday changed some of that.
I met Lex yesterday morning at the polling place I was working. In tow was his beautiful Victoria - whom I also know pretty well it seems.
Last night, a woman with her arm in a sling, stood in front of me while I was watching the election returns at the courthouse and asked, "how do you like me now?" One of her "bundle of joys" was with her.
Sam was at the courthouse doing his thing also but we didn't get much time to talk. It was like old home week. Also... at the risk of being accused of changing the color of my nose to brown...
I think the N&R screens its potential hires for personality traits before they make an offer of employment. The courthouse was thick with my local daily's writers and photographer last night and, especially after meeting N&R editor/reporter Lex Alexander yesterday, I am struck by how many of them I know... and, to a man/woman, like.
Of course Maria was there driving all of the candidates batty as they were probably wondering why a reporter was paying such close attention to me when it was their night. Next to her was educational reporter Bruce Buchanon who I had never officially met but makes a great impression.
Editorialists Allen Johnson and Betsy Robinson were formulating their opininions with their usual pleasant aplomb. Mark Binker, whom I got to know pretty well during the baseball stuff and my ensuing candidacy was everywhere all at once - very professional guy.
Neighbor Margaret Moffet-Banks, although not in attendance last night, is as affiable as they come belying the devastation she can reek on her subjects when she needs to do so. Jim Schlosser and Merideth Barkley have impressed me with their personalities in past dealings as well. City Council beat reporter Matt Williams is also the kind of guy I would like to have on my front porch. Go Triad's Jeri Rowe is a former neighbor and has actually spent time on the porch - he keeps threatening to return to the 'hood.
It is obvious that one must be required to score a 95 or above on the "likablility" portion of the N&R's personality test in order to gain employment there.
