Sweet idea

A strip from a fortune cookie just flitted out from the recesses of my purse when I was scrounging around in there for something. It reads: "It tastes sweet." I have no idea why I saved that one. I know I've saved others predicting my imminent success, but I can't find them now -- maybe threw them out when I was cleaning. I did find a scrap of paper in my desk that reads, "If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you." Yikes.

I love this idea: A man named Isidro "Sid" Martinez of San Antonio has reinvented the fortune cookie as a bilingual "Takito":

The 45-year-old has reinvented the after-meal cookie in the shape of a taco with the taste of cinnamon, a signature spice found in pastries of the Hispanic culture. But instead of an English fortune with lottery numbers on a slip of paper, cookie lovers get a dicho (saying or proverb) in both Spanish and English.

I bet it tastes sweet.

Bread and butter pickles

I'm eating bread and butter pickles straight out of the jar I bought at a local farm stand. I also picked up fresh ears of corn and a zucchini. Do you buy from farm stands or maybe farmer's markets near you? Or maybe you have your own garden?

I grew up eating great fresh veggies from my grandfather's half-acre vegetable garden -- tomatoes, cucumbers, wax beans (aka Romano beans), green bell peppers, carrots, and sometimes corn. He also had raspberry bushes that we picked from and ate out of the hand. Every August, my father used to go over and help jar tons of tomatoes, which made a lot of spaghetti sauce for us all winter. Alas, I live in a condo so no vegetable gardening here, but we do have lots of great local farm stands. I love this time of year.
