Happy as shells

Happiest (naturally) as shells
      tumbled in the shallows
securing the calm of a clam ...

- from The Plenty, by Jeanne Marie Beaumont

---

I'm heading out to the New Hampshire Seacoast again for the weekend. My brother and my nephew are coming out to spend a week with my parents. Alas, I will only have the weekend to spend with them. But as the four of them proved to get along so well when they travelled to Ireland last summer, my short visit will be enough. They'll have a good time together and my mother will be tremendously happy to have family around. I'm a bit of an ill-fitting cog, at least with my brother in the picture (a right-wing Republican of the shouting-down "shut up you don't know anything" variety). I will keep my opinions and feelings entirely to myself. There's an expression I recently learned from my Argentine friends, "me saca de quisio," which I think translates roughly to "he disturbs my tranquility." (If anyone has a better translation, digame!)

Anyway, the weather is predicted to be lovely and I expect we'll have some nice walks on the beach and some good seafood in Portsmouth. Meanwhile, I just got email from my mother out of the blue, headed by the following, which I will take to heart (except this weekend, out of self-preservation or to just preserve the tranquility -- "secure the calm of a clam" -- and anyway, I'm not sure the expression holds when it comes to family, at least in my experience):

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."  - Dr. Seuss
