(Not quite) all work and no play

I worked last night until midnight – okay, with numerous breaks, including three hours out of the day running over to walk Bibi twice. On the way back from my first Bibi run, I stopped at the grocery store and picked up a rotisserie chicken and some vegetables. And last night I made a quick stew of onions, baby bella mushrooms, a can of good Muir Glen diced tomatoes, a bell pepper and some herbs, threw in chicken pieces and then tossed it over penne pasta. Yummy. Just had the leftovers tonight.

With a couple of deadlines met this morning, I went off and spent the afternoon at my hairdresser’s (yes, it’s a multi-hour process) – this is Maddy, my partner in Spanish learning. The salon excursion had the added benefit of seeing Sandra and Adriana, who I missed on Monday because I was working. So no Spanish class Monday but a chance to hablar a bit today.

I congratulated them on Argentina winning last night in soccer to advance to the final, which is Sunday against Uruguay or Brazil, whoever wins tonight. I couldn’t watch the game last night because I was working (it bumped my telenovela), but I had it on in the background and ran in when I heard each of the three “gol gol gol gol gol…” announcements. Marcello, the salon owner and also Argentine, or Italo-Argentine, says he hates that announcer on Univision who does the crazy “gol” announcements and color commentary. He says the guy doesn’t know anything about soccer. Well, beats the hell out of me, because I can’t understand much other than “left to so-and-so, forward to so-and-so, off the cabeza of so-and-so” etc. Adriana says she doesn’t understand soccer much either, but we had a nice discussion of the thighs on so-and-so and the long hair on so-and-so. I think she was impressed when I mentioned Batistuta, a former Argentine player who I noticed in the last World Cup, who Adriana says now plays for Italy. He had great soccer hair. That’s what I call hair that flows straight out behind the player when he runs so that it looks like speed marks on a comic book character.

Well, more work in store for tomorrow, things hanging over my head. Plus a couple of new projects in the wings. Hard to complain, but it’s difficult to go from 0 to 60 in like 5 seconds - and then stay at that speed long after you just want to fall sleep at the wheel. I passed up an opportunity to go to a Red Sox game tomorrow night because I have a meeting all day and then an appointment with my furry friend, Bibi. And besides, I’m feeding antifreeze/ coolant into my car every time I have to drive it. Afraid to use the AC. Friday it goes to my mechanic.

That’s the news from here.
