Hopkinton hiking

We had a nice hike today in Hopkinton State Park on the easy trails that crisscross through the woods beside the Hopkinton Reservoir. The only difficult thing was keeping track of where we were because the trails aren’t well marked and all of the several picnic areas and parking lots throughout the park look pretty much alike. We inadvertently circled back the wrong way after we’d been hiking about two hours, adding an extra half hour to get back to the car. We were getting hungry and a little tired; we set out at 11:30am and didn’t get back to the car until after 2pm – not that that’s long compared to a good hike in the mountains, but we hadn’t planned on anything more than a long walk in the woods before lunch. Mainly we were getting concerned for Sam, Lori’s dog, who is quite old and she was beginning to tire.

To avoid getting lost in the woods again, we walked back on the road along the reservoir by the boat ramp, where I went kayaking for the first time one very hot August day about six weeks ago. The weather, among other things, has changed since that perfect day; it's now chilled down to the upper 50’s. I feel a bit sad, remembering. This Wednesday will be the first day of fall. A new season begins.
