DOMS

I’m experiencing what they call in sports medicine “delayed onset muscle soreness,” mainly in my quadriceps – which did much of the work bicycling yesterday. I felt fine during the evening, but I woke with screaming muscles in the middle of the night. Normally if I’ve over-exercised, I’ve felt stiffness or muscle ache only when getting up to walk after sitting for awhile, not when lying completely still. I guess that was before I became middle-aged. Well, I’ll live. I really enjoyed my bike ride – hadn’t been on my bike in three months, hence the soreness – and I hope to get out on it more this fall. After a few days’ rest of course.

The other consequence of the exhausting workout yesterday was brain fatigue, as evidenced by my rather pedestrian (as opposed to, say, free-wheeling?) writing last night. I see I described the scenery along the bike path as “very nice” more than once, which I’m sure conveys a thoroughly clear idea of what it looked like! Hopefully the photographs helped. Maybe I can write more later.

Samosa

I came home to very sad news last night. Lori’s dog Sam, who we took hiking last weekend, has passed away. She was diagnosed with inoperable cancer some time ago, but has been enjoying her life up to the end. Lori reported that she and Sam had a great time on Nantucket this past weekend, swimming and hiking and hanging out. Then she took a sudden turn for the worse. But she died a happy dog. I’m writing this with tears in my eyes and my heart goes out to Lori. Sammy was a great dog and she had a good life. She’ll be missed.
