East Bay Bike Path
I drove down to Rhode Island this morning to the East Bay Bike Path, parking in Barrington, which is roughly at the halfway point (map here). I inadvertantly headed north and didn't realize it until I could see Providence, but this part of the path was also very nice, following the Providence River closely as well as running beside some very nice ponds. I must have seen a dozen or more swans along that section of the path as well as a sandhill crane on the river bank in Riverside.
It began to get more crowded with groups of walkers as well as cyclists, so I turned around and headed back south, stopping on the banks of a pond at around noon to eat my sandwich (AB&J on Ezekiel bread, yum). I passed my car in the Barrington Shopping Center lot and continued south towards Bristol. It's a prettier ride south, crossing over the Barrington and Warren Rivers, through the town of Warren with its bayside cottages, and down through the marsh grasses beside Narragansett Bay. In Bristol, I turned in to Colt State Park and spent 30 minutes or so riding the paths beside the bay and through the woods - lovely park. There were lots of people out sunning themselves beside the water, picnicking, or playing on the lawns. It was just a beautiful day to be out, mid-70's or so and brightly sunny, and it was nice to see so many people out enjoying it.
I had plenty of water with me, but I was thrilled to see the Del's Frozen Lemonade truck just outside the park. I can still taste it, and feel the cold headache I gave myself snarfing it down. I rode the rest of the path into Bristol, sat for awhile in the park there, then headed back to my car. I finished a little after 2pm, and I'd say I probably rode 18 miles or so, maybe more. After my ride, I drove down to Carol's, made use of her shower, and after watching some of the Red Sox-Yankees game, we walked down to that great little bistro down the street from her house, where we sat outside having dinner and wine and a wide-ranging and thoroughly interesting chat. And now I'm beat. I have a feeling I'll be sleeping very well tonight.
