Senate Campaign News 20040808

The newspapers state-wide broke out of their slumber somewhat today.

Betty Castor and Bill McCollum were in Jacksonville yesterday hunting down undecided voters.  The race hasn't received much attention from the Florida Times-Union, so it is not surprising that there are bunches for them to talk to (a recent University of North Florida poll showed 50% of Duval county voters (on both sides) undecided).  McCollum walked neighborhoods and attended a fish fry while Castor had a school rally at a shopping center.

The Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post both wrote about the agressive campaign style of Peter Deutsch.  While the Herald article has good things to say about him, it also questions to what degree his style backfires against him.  The Post article focuses on the difficulty of catching up with Betty Castor

The Tampa Tribune has an article that apparently states that Peter Deutsch won't be bringing his Blackberry device to any more debates after he caused a minor stir when he received text messages from his consultant during Tuesday's debate.  The link for the story is dead at the moment, alas.  Feel free to complain.

The Palm Beach Post and Miami Herald had endorsments for the Senate primary today.  The Palm Beach Post opted for Mel Martinez in the Republican primary, calling him the "White House candidate".  On the Democratic side, both papers opted for Betty Castor, neither seem pleased with the 'negative campaiging' of Peter Deutsch.  Presumably, the Herald's endorsement for a Republican candidate will come next Sunday.
