Senate Campaign News 20040815

As one would guess, Hurricane Charley is the dominant topic in Florida's newspapers. Today did bring a little bit of news, however.

Mel Martinez continued his streak of endorsements by major newspapers as he picked up the endorsement of the Orlando Sentinel and South-Florida Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale). On the Democratic side, the Orlando paper went with Betty Castor, while the Fort Lauderdale paper broke her streak by going with Peter Deutsch (a bit of a hometown favorite).

LATER: I missed the Tampa Tribune's endorsements.  Martinez' streak is broken as they recommend Bill McCollum.  On the Democratic side, they went with Castor.

The St Petersburg Times wrote about the oft overshadowed Senate race.

The Miami Herald has a biographical article on Republican candidate Bill McCollum.

Hurricane Charley has had a bit of an effect on McCollum and Martinez as they both based their campaigns out of Orlando. Martinez' headquarters is without power and is being temporarily reloctated (it also has a Miami office). McCollum's website seems to be down due to the storm.
