Ugh

I belatedly discovered that the NBC affilliate in Jacksonville, WTLV was doing a live webcast of the debate. All I caught of it was the closing statements of the candidates.

MoveOn.Org endorses Betty Castor

In an e-mail to members, the MoveOn Pac endorsed Betty Castor.

I've e-mailed their press office to see if they will send me the text of their endorsement.

For now, we have to settle for Castor's press release

LATER: Here's what the MoveOn PAC says about her:

Betty Castor is running a great campaign for U.S. Senate, activating an online and grassroots base in one of the most important battleground states of 2004. Betty has proven she can deliver progressive solutions in education, job creation and expanded health care for our families. As a state senator, as Education Commissioner, and as a university president, Betty founded the nationally recognized Healthy Kids insurance program, created the partnership that helped build the I-4 High-Tech corridor, and led efforts to improve education standards in Florida and the nation. MoveOn rarely endorses in contested primaries but because Betty Castor received such tremendous support from our membership during the nominating process and because we believe Florida is a key place to focus our efforts this election, we have decided to get involved in Castor's competitive Democratic primary. We believe Betty Castor is the candidate best poised to help Democrats win the Florida Senate seat and help take back the U.S. Senate.

Also: quotes from people who nominated Castor for MoveOn's endorsement.

Senate Campaign News 200407810

The President is in the panhandle of Florida with Senator McCain today, making stops in Pensacola, Niceville, and Panama City.

The televised debate among the major Republican candidates for U.S. Senate is this evening.  As I am out of state at the moment, I will be watching the debate with a few days worth of tape delay.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The St Petersburg Times gives us some insight on the ad-buys of the  candidates as we have only three weeks left before the primary.

On the Republican side, Mel Martinez has bought $1.3 million worth for the week before the  August 31 primary.  Bill McCollum has $500,000 worth of buys (but the campaign says that they've actually bought more), while Doug Gallagher has made no ad buys, and Johnnie Byrd is advertising on radio and intends to buy some air time.

The Democratic candidates have been buying their ads on a weekly basis.  Hitherto, Castor has been running ads in places where media buys are cheap (Gainesville, for example).  EMILY's list has spent $850,000 on ads supporting her.   Peter Deutsch has spent $850,00 on ads and plans on increasing his buys as the primary approaches.  Alex Penelas is about to release an ad that will be broadcast statewide that points out his support for pulling troops out of Iraq by the end of 2005.
