The OPC Foundation is conducting a couple of very important surveys that will help determine the direction of its Compliance/Certification committee. One survey is for end users of OPC. The other is for OPC Vendors.
The Vendor Survey is soliciting the help of vendors in defining the direction of the OPC Compliance Working Group. In particular, this survey will be used to determine the proper staffing of the 3rd party test labs. The detailed results of both surveys will be held in confidence, but a summary will be available on the Web.

I've been following the ZigBee wireless sensor network protocol and Ember, a ZigBee developer and supplier, for years. Never could get a manufacturing application out of them. Now, I just received a press release from Ember calling 2006 a breakout year. But interestingly, there was no mention of revenues in the release. It did tout the adoption of Zigbee in building automation and a new management team at Ember. Even more interesting for me--no mention of manufacturing. From the release, "Ember, a provider of ZigBee networks for smarter, more energy efficient buildings and homes, today announced that it is seeing increasing momentum in its focus markets--building automation, integrated home automation and advanced metering--and is poised for significant growth in 2007."
We all know that manufacturing people are slow to adopt new technology. I guess that shows in the target markets--and new installations. The release notes that Westmont Hospitality Group used Ember technology and software from Riga Development to eliminate energy waste and reduce costs up to 40 percent at its Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn properties.
So progress for the technology. Anyone looking into it for manufacturing applications? Even just for building?
