AND THE WINNER IS...

KQED's groundbreaking interactive "You Decide" has been named winner of the 2004 Batten Award by JLAB: The Institute for Interactive Journalism.

You Decide is on-line polling that doesn't merely seeks users opinions, it forces them to think through issues. Each time the user "votes" on the issue, they are confronted with an opposing argument and offered the chance to vote again. The result is totals that can reflect more thought than usually goes into such on-line polling. More importantly, the user goes away with a deeper understanding of issues.

And that's a great use of the interactivity of the Web.

Also from the Batten awards: CBC.ca's report on the crash of Swissair flight 111 was named a site of "Special Distinction."
