TRAMPS LIKE US....

The press has let the country down. It's taken a very amoral stand, in that essential issues are often portrayed as simply one side says this and the other side says that....The job of the press is to tell the truth without fear or favor. We have to get back to that standard.

AND NOW IT GETS DANGEROUS

Dan Rather and the CBS gang got gamed by somebody (various Web speculation lays it at the feet of evil GOP troll Karl Rove). Blogworld goes nuts. Damnation rains down on CBS and dire predictions (along the lines of The End of Rather and CBS Will Die a Horrrible Death) rule.

Funny thing, though.

I Want Media (scroll down) reports on a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll:

Poll: CBS' Memo Story an 'Honest Mistake' Most Americans think CBS News anchor Dan Rather should not be fired for his controversial story on President Bush's military service, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll.

Which seems to put those in Blogworld on the same level as perfeshional jurnlists when it comes to being in touch with Joe and Jane Lunchbucket.

That's the funny part.

Here's the dangerous part, also from I Want Media.

Congressman Calls for Newsroom Scrutiny: Due to the CBS News debacle, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, says he's concerned about accuracy in news broadcasts: "Once the elections are over we're going to do some hearings."

Politicians are going to hold hearings about accuracy?

Jeebus.
