Oxymoron? Upscale McDonalds? [posted by Troy] Checkout this post from Gapers Block about a Tribune story that discusses a new upscale McDonalds in Oak Brook. Free Speech Zones First Amendment Only Counts Where They Say It Counts [posted by Troy] Have you heard about the deal with the Free Speech Zones (see Baltimore Chronicle, or CNN articles)? They used these in Boston for the Democratic National Conventions, and they'll be using these in NYC for the Republican Convention. Basically, Free Speech Zones are penned in areas for protestors. This way they can say what they want, but no one can see them or hear them, so what's the point of this part of the Bill of Rights? Keeping safety and order at the conventions is one thing, but really, is it right to sanitize broadcasasts and convention attendees from the oppinions of opposition groups? Students Not Faculty [posted by Troy] Augustana was mentioned (within the first 2 minutes) in this Chicago Public Radio Piece about Illinois youth protesting at the Republican National Convention. They called Augie conservative, which ticked me off. Now, most of the students were pretty conservative, but the faculty were far from conservative. The Chicago Public Radio piece mentions that this girl "discovers" that she was not conservative, even though her parents were republicans. Come on, give Augustana some credit here. We now have record deficitis thanks to the largest tax cuts in history.
