Court [posted by Troy] Since we have some Freakonimics readers in the audience, I thought I'd pass along this article about the author of Freakonimics being sued for saying that another economist's theory was unreplicable. This seems to be pushing it to me. Just because someone criticizes your work, I don't think you get to sue them.

Missed Opportunities [posted by Troy] As most people paying any attention know, the Christian right dominates our political landscape right now. The other day I heard this Fresh Air Story about William Jennings Bryan, and in that story the author claims we missed our chance for a construction of a true Christian left. Bryan was at one time a fervent Christian, but also a supporter of labor, women's sufferage, and populist causes. He was anti-capital, but not of the liberal elite, which ended up dominating left-wing causes. The theory is that the left missed the Christian boat. Well, I found this interesting, and I forgot about it until I heard about the death of Rev. William Coffin. Coffin is a person whom I greatly admire. He protested nuclear proliferation, fought for the rights of the poor, and participated in the civil rights movement. When I heard of his passing, I was reminded there is still a faint flicker of a Christian left, but it has become so very weak. Here are two of my favorite Coffin quotes: Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat. We must continue to ask socialist questions, but always be skeptical of socialist answers.
