My New Year's Resolution It must be all those Christmas cookies and chocolates that I've been munching on that has got me thinking about bike riding. I've decided that come the spring, I'm going to try biking to work at least a couple times a week. Why? Well, after doing some thinking, and reading various sites on the internet, here are 10 good reasons:
1. Cars get their energy from non-renewable fuel that is killing the planet. I run on renewable energy, which tastes much better than gasoline (not that I've ever drank gasoline!).
2. Related to that, cars spit out toxic fumes that are poisonous to humans and the environment. My waste is bio-degradable, and although it might smell pretty bad, it won't kill you.
3. My car uses about 40 times the amount of energy that I would: over 30,000 kJ for every litre of fuel. I could run on a good breakfast (about 100 kJ).
4. My car weighs about 20 times as much as I do, in spite of all the Christmas goodies, requiring it to use far more energy to move around. A bike weighs probably about a quarter or less of my body weight.
5. The energy and resources to use my car could make bikes for about 20 people.
6. My car cost more than $18,000. A decent bike costs less than $1,000.
7. Gas, repair, insurance, registration and maintenance costs run into the hundreds of dollars each year for a car. A bike costs about $100 or less to maintain annually.
8. Because of my car, cities lay waste to the land creating parking spots for me. I can park a bike almost anywhere and can even take it into my office if necessary.
9. Cars also require millions of dollars in highway infrastructure. My bike can travel on a dirt path.
10. Cars can make me sick through pollution and sedentarism. A bike can make me healthier, stronger, and can give me a better looking tush.
