Where is Jesus? Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus have gone missing in Whitehorse. Up until a few days ago, they were nestled in the snow in front of Christ Church Cathedral, along with the shepherds, wise men, and numerous animals. But at some point over the New Year's long week-end, they went walkabout. Either that, or someone is holding them for ransom.
This reminds me of a story from Iqaluit, then called Frobisher Bay.
There was a man called Claude Denot who ran a candy store. He also had a cockatiel that spoke in three languages and would eat nothing but communion wafers, but that's another story. Anyway, one year Claude went to Disneyland, and brought back with him several Disney cassette tapes. He set up a large speaker on the roof of his candy store and at just about any time of day or night, Disney music could be heard blaring from that speaker.
Finally, someone had had enough. When Claude went to open his store one morning, his speaker was gone, and in its place was a ransom note. The note said, "If you promise to stop playing Disney music from the speaker, it will be returned unharmed. If not, we will kill the stupid thing." Denot vowed never to stop playing the music. "It is for the children of Frobisher Bay who will never be able to go to Disneyland: so I have brought Disneyland to them."
Days later, when the rest of the town had all but forgotten about the kidnapping, the speaker showed up on the steps of the Nunatsiaq newspaper office. No note, and no explanation. After a happy reunion, Claude once again played his Disney tapes, but INSIDE his store, and at a much more reasonable volume.
