This and That #2 It's an unusual time for me to be posting. Rarely is the computer free in our house at this time of night. I am in the kitchen waiting for my caribou stew (tomorrow's dinner) to cook. With my trusty pressure cooker, it won't be too long.
I learned something this morning that's been sitting on my mind all day. A woman from Nova Scotia has been sending me some information about my mom's side of the family, and I just found out that my great grandmother Sarah was born on the same day I was, but 100 years earlier. The more I think of it, the more odd it seems that my mother never mentioned that to me, nor did she mention the fact that Sarah had 15 children! Mom used to stay with her in the summers, so you think she would have talked to me about that. I'm learning there was a lot about Mom's family that she didn't tell me. When I look back, I guess I never seemed interested. I was more intrigued about my dad's family tree. But now I wish I had an evening with my mom to ask about these people. Isn't that always the way.....a lot of us tend not to gather the family stories until it's too late. Ah well, my dad is still around and I will pick his brain when I see him next summer.
Things are coming together for Iris' and my trip to Argentina. I'm being picky about a hotel though and haven't booked anything yet. We found one place that looked fabulous....a hostel but it also had private rooms. Unfortunately it was full, as was another place I looked at. I'm sure I'll find something in the next day or two.
Janet's tip of the day: I used to love making popcorn in a pot on the stove. After our kitchen was renovated and we got a ceramic countertop, I couldn't make popcorn that way for fear that shaking the pot back and forth would scratch the ceramic. And I'm not keen on those bags of store bought popcorn that you pop in the microwave. However I recently read that by putting a quarter cup of popcorn in a paper lunch bag, adding a couple of teaspoonfuls of olive oil and a bit of salt, taping the bag shut with masking tape, and putting it in the microwave for a minute or so, it makes fabulous popcorn, without all the chemicals of the store bought stuff. I tried it tonight and it really works. Now Alan is in the kitchen making some too.
