Another 'Ah-ha' Moment I happened to stumble across the 1978 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" over the week-end while channel surfing. Two things struck me: one, how good a film this is. I hadn't seen it since it came out, and I remember thinking at the time that it was good, and that was confirmed on seeing it a second time. I must admit I haven't seen the 1956 original, but it couldn't be any better than this re-make. A very young looking Donald Sutherland was great, as was Leonard Nimroy. And there were wonderfully odd camera angels, adding to the mood of everything being 'off centre'.
The whole message of course, was about mindlessness....how we have beome mindless and willing to believe what we are told without question. There's a great book signing scene with Nimroy, who's a psychologist that everyone seems to think is Jesus Christ incarnate because of his innovative shock therapy treatments (coincidently, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was on TV the following day..a film made more than 10 years before this one).
But apart from all that, what struck me was how much our society has changed since that movie was made. Not one person was seen using a cell phone (in fact the old rotary phones were used in this movie), not one computer was in sight....and this was less than 30 years ago. We really do live in another world.
The bit about mindlessness, though...well, the more things change the more they stay the same!
