Although it has been over a week since his death, I still get a bit
misty-eyed over the remembrances of Chuck Thompson. On my way to
work, I heard Frank Deford
give a commentary on his remembrance of Chuck. His commentary
also talked about the departure of other announcers and the meaning of
those departures.
His commentary, though, reinforces what Chuck's death signifies.
The time where an announcer was identified with a town and its team is
no more. The baseball radio announcers painted a picture with
their voices, and they did it in a unique style. Now, radio is
but a supplement to the bombastic coverage that television
provides. Gone is the time where a beautiful picture of the game
is painted by an announcer. Instead, we are left with identical
sounding mouthpieces who have very little identification with the town
or the team.
The commentary is a good one, with some memorable clips of Chuck in his
heyday. I recommend listening to it (which will be available
online after 10:00 AM ET).

Although this has been announced on other more popular forums, I will
also perform the public service of spreading the word of this
gathering. As posted on my good friend's blog, the details are below.
March Blog Baltimore Happy Hour When: Wednesday, March 16th Time: 6:00pm to whenever Where: Dizzy Issie’s, 300 W. 30 Street, Baltimore, Maryland
If you have no idea where this place is, click here and use the power of Google Maps
to assist you. If any of you happen to need further assistance,
email me or IM me via the links on the right. I will more than
gladly help.
If this is your first Happy Hour, I can assure you it will be a good
time. I attended my first one back in December, and in spite of
my fears I had a good time. Some of the things you might see
tonight:
- the consumption of varying quantities of adult beverages;
- the snapping of digital photos (if you wish to maintain your anonymity, let the photographer know);
- the broad topics of conversation;
- the growth of a burgeoning community of bloggers.
Come out and enjoy alcohol and good conversation! Be there, bitches!!!
All smack-talk aside, come on out and have a good time. Trust me.
