With Labor Day passed, I am reminded of Johnny Mercer's Summer Wind
as performed my Frank Sinatra. Although the song is about the end
of a love affair, I find that it is a great metaphor for the end of the
summer season. Sure, summer has a few more weeks left--and around
here its temperatures tend to extend into very late September.
Nonetheless, Labor Day is the end of summer for me.
It has been a great summer, but I must admit that I am amazed at how
quickly it has gone by. Of course, as I tend to get older, time
tends to fly by even faster. This summer has been a very good
one. I have spent it with family and friends, and I am quite
fortunate to have those to enjoy. I have also been quite
fortunate to make a change in employers that is definitely for the
better. Most of all--compared to last summer--this one has been a
far more pleasant and enjoyable one.
Summer has had its shares of small downs, though. I have had to
address the problems I have had with my mother. I find myself
wishing that would have turned out better. I also wonder where
things are. At this time, though, I know she is probably not very
happy with me. Finally, she has had the last virtual laugh,
sticking me with a $250 balance remaining on the bail bond I posted in
April. Oh well, I consider that a rather large sum to pay to
close a rather saddening chapter in my life.
I do welcome autumn with open arms, though. It means that the
temperatures begin to fall, and winter approaches behind it. The
leaves change color, and I think for the first time I will actually
make an effort to enjoy the foliage.
So, summer, I bid adieu to you for another year. Next year, I
will take fuller advantage of you. I will enjoy the comforts you
have to offer next year, making sure to actually take the time and
enjoy them.
