A couple of weeks ago, I received a note from one of my best
friends, Paul Holway. The note was asking for a contribution to the
second annual "Walking for George" for the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk. It is an effort to raise funds
to help fight blood cancers, but with a reason that is a bit closer to
home.
Paul's father, George Holway has been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma for
about two years. Last August, George underwent a stem cell transplant in
an effort to treat his myeloma. Unfortunately, the transplant did not
work. Since January of this year, George has been undergoing a clinical
trial on a new drug. George has also visited a specialist in multiple
myeloma to understand the options available to him. This year, George
hopes to make the walk and wear a shirt that says "I'm George."
Personally, I was saddened when I first learned of George's illness. He
was a kind and good man, who had always been a good person to talk with and a
great person to spend time with. One of the things I looked forward to
when we were in college--and afterward--was the occasional cigar and drinks to
be enjoyed with George. I know I did not do it as much as some
others. Finally, it was always good to just hang out with George.
The Holway Family is asking for donations, and I am sending mine to them in
short order. It is my hope that all three of the people who read my blog
can also make a donation to sponsor George and his family on the walk.
Since most people are in a giving spirit following the aftermath of Katrina,
why not contribute to another worthy cause? Last year, the "Walking
for George" team raised more than any other non-corporate team in St. Louis, over
$20,000.
To donate, send a check payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Include your Name, Address, and the Amount of Your Donation
when mailing your check. Finally, send the check to the following
address:
Holway Family
1001 Scarlet Bend Ct.
Kirkwood, MO 63122
I am in a donating mood, so I will be making a contribution.
