> Dan Gillmor: The Daily Kos notes a Republican astroturf campaign in which many newspapers printed a letter, written by Bush operatives but signed by people in local communities, offering political support to the president's campaign. I don't expect much shame from the people who would sign their names to someone else's work in this way. I do expect better of newspaper editorial pages, which should be checking for this kind of stuff. New media, but sleazy old tricks.

> Darren Barefoot: Gizmodo mentioned the recent Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness update, which has resulted in the usual meme fallout at BoingBoing, Metafilter and elsewhere. There's no Slashdotting, but the hamster that powers this site is feeling a wee bit taxed.

> David Pescovitz: Schwinn has re-issued its original Sting-Ray street bike. The 2004 models are available with the classic banana seat frame or in a new chopped Harley-esque low-rider design. Too bad they don't offer a sissy bar option, probably a safety decision to avoid encouraging Evil Knievel-style wheelies. (Thanks, C-Lo!)

> Diego Doval: Wired has announced that they are ditching the capital 'I' in Internet [via Dave] as well as the capital W in Web and the capital N in Net. While I don't have an opinion about the Web and Net cases, I think that the case for Internet is different...

> Dave Winer: Big Dave Jacobs still needs a kidney. It's been a rough year in the Jacobs house, but The Big Guy is hanging in there. Anyway, after teaching his youngest kid to lip fart last week, I have to make amends by pointing to a walk for PKD that Dave's wife Amy is taking on September 19. She and Dave want to find a cure before any of their four kids, each of whom has a 50-50 chance of having the disease, gets symptomatic. You can help by sponsoring Amy's walk.

> Philip Greenspun: Partying hard and dropping dead from AIDS at age 40 doesn't ideal.  But it is really worse than sitting at a desk until age 70 processing insurance forms or programming in C?

> Scott Young: I was reminded today that we have Manila localized in a number of different languages besides English, including Danish, Dutch, German, French, and Italian. Localizations are quite difficult and time consuming. I think the complexity of doing a localization often goes unnoticed and the translation heroes often unsung. To rectify this situation in one small way, we are going to set up a site on UserLand to give credit to these kind people and hopefully encourage others to comment if they find issues in any of the existing localizations. Look for this in the next few weeks. One more thing, we have our fingers crossed that we will get a Spanish localization as well.
