Rogers Cadenhead: Sept. 18 marks the day that free hosting is scheduled to end on Buzzword.Com, the server that houses 3,000 weblogs formerly published at Weblogs.Com. After learning about the costs required to host the sites and the amount of activity on the server, I have changed those plans: All existing weblogs will be hosted for free, as long as they've been updated at least once in 2004. Defunct sites also can stay at the request of their publishers, and I'll be allowing new sites to join the server soon. During the Weblogs.Com outage, dozens of people on the Web had strong opinions on free weblog hosting and the expenses related to such a deal. Here's some fodder for that debate...

David Sifry: We are very pleased that CNN has invited Technorati back to provide real-time analysis of the political blogosphere at next week's Republican National Convention. I will be in New York at CNN's convention broadcast center at Madison Square Garden, along with Technorati's Richard Ault. Technorati will provide on-air commentary for CNN, and a daily update at CNN.com, on what bloggers are saying about politics and the convention. We're really excited and looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the work of the great bloggers who will be writing about the convention and related activities...

Philip Greenspun: Manila, the software from Userland that sits behind Harvard's Weblog server, has recently been enhanced with a feature that makes it easy to moderate the comments. This should make it tougher for spammers to abuse a Manila-hosted Weblog and maybe also to improve the overall interest level of the comments. Oftentimes the comments tend to be abusive, which satisfies the (angry) person who posted them but not other readers. The result is emails like the following, from one of my former students at MIT: "P.S. Your blog's comments section continues to amaze. It's like some kind of zoo, but with idiots instead of exotic animals."...
