Over on ZopeZen, this comment really rubbed me the wrong way, even though later in the thread he says that he wasn't referring to the author of the software the thread was referencing. I give away code with the hope that it will be useful to others, and my highest hope is that someone looks at the code and learns something, even if that lesson is how NOT to do something. I, and probably most other people that write code and give it away DO want to benefit the users, it's just that we don't get any feedback. Personally, I've gotten a few messages in support, and certain pages do me the honor of pointing at my projects, and others use my tools, but in terms of actual useful feedback, the response has been minimal. For the most part, I'm okay with that. I'm not doing this for fame or fortune, I'm doing this because I enjoy it. I just can't help the feeling that the people that are complaining about the quality of open source projects and yet aren't interested in either rolling up their sleeves or opening their checkbooks are more concerned about what they can get for free rather than what they can do to help.
I wrote the stuff to scratch my own itch. I released it because I
thought someone else might want to see it. My own conceit was that I
would be contributing to the amount of available knowledge. |
