For tax purposes, Bush claims Chicago PO Box as his "home address"
Well that's interesting. They've got a house in rural Texas and a nice home-office setup on Pennsylvania Avenue. But for tax purposes, President Bush and his wife, Laura, claim a Chicago post office box as their "home address."
On the 1040 they signed, which the White House released last week, the listed home address is "Northern Trust Co., P.O. Box 803968, Chicago, IL 60680."

THE PARABLE OF FRIST THE PHARISEE __________
NYT yesterday:
As the Senate heads toward a showdown over the rules governing judicial confirmations, Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, has agreed to join a handful of prominent Christian conservatives in a telecast portraying Democrats as "against people of faith" for blocking President Bush's nominees. Sen. Reid (via Atrios):
I am disappointed that in an attempt to hide what the debate is really about, Senator Frist would exploit religion like this. Religion to me is a very personal thing. I have been a religious man all my adult life. My wife and I have lived our lives and raised our children according to the morals and values taught by the faith to which we prescribe. No one has the right to judge mine or anyone else’s personal commitment to faith and religion.
God isn’t partisan. Luke 18:9-14
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Buying a Censorship Box? The House of Representatives approved the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005, which makes it legal to automatically snip out bad language, violence and references to God.
(Via NYT > Pogue's Posts.)
Wouldn't it be fun to have a box that would automatically insert all that stuff into Disney movies?

Adolf Hitler: Biography of the Day Adolf Hitler reviewing troops on the Eastern Front, 1939. Heinrich Hoffmann, MunichAdolf Hitler
"I know, my comrades, it must have been difficult at times, when you were desiring change which didn't come, so time and time again the appeal has to be made to continue the struggle—you mustn't act yourself, you must obey, you must give in, you must submit to this overwhelming need to obey."
Adolf Hitler, speaking to SA and SS troops, January 30, 1933, the day he was appointed chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler, born this day in Austria in 1889, was leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party (from 1920/21) and dictator of Germany (1933-45). By the time of his demise, he had broken down the structure of the world in which he lived and inaugurated a new era with even greater potentialities of power and destruction.

Does General Motors Have Three Years to Live? This is not good:
FT.com / Industries / Autos - GM abandons profit forecast after $1.1bn loss: General Motors on Tuesday abandoned its profit prediction for the year as the world's biggest carmaker reported a quarterly loss of $1.1bn, its worst in more than a decade.... GM said uncertainty about efforts to deal with its "healthcare cost crisis" and other key parts of its business meant it could not provide any guidance for profits this year.... The withdrawal of the forecast came as the automotive business reported a first quarter operating cash outflow of $3bn, more than the $2bn revised target the company had previously set for the full year.... The cashflow has been closely watched as investors anticipate a downgrade of GM's credit rating to junk bond status, a move which would force many investment-grade bond funds to sell their holdings in one of the world%u2019s top five borrowers.
Rick Wagoner, chairman and chief executive, said the problems lay with the north American business, which he took direct control of last month. GM has been hammered in the US by rising healthcare costs and cuts to production in order to reduce stocks of unsold cars at dealerships.... This is the worst figure since accounting changes in 1992, when GM was on the verge of bankruptcy, led to a quarterly loss of $21bn.... GM said its cash and easily realisable investments stood at $19.8bn at the end of March, down from $23.3bn at the start of the year.

Time Covers Coulter on Anniversary of Oklahoma City Bombing "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building." -- Ann Coulter as quoted in the New York Observer, Aug. 20, 2002. "On TV or in person, you can trust that Coulter will speak from her heart." -- Time Magazine cover story, week of April 19. 2005.

I don't remember the last time I bought an issue of Time Magazine, certainly not within the last year. But they hit a new low this week, and it'll be a long time before I buy an issue again. See Media Matters for a good rundown of her rather habitual lies.

Bible Stickers?
Christopher A. Duva, a psychology instructor and freelance writer living in Portland, Oregon, makes a novel proposal in Free Inquiry:
"Perhaps the following compromise can be reached: both sides could agree to put stickers that encourage critical thinking on biology textbooks as long as similar stickers are also put on religious texts, specifically the Bible. The proposed sticker might read something like this."
This book contains material on Christianity. Christianity is a belief system that explains the origin of the universe and all living things in it as an act of divine creation. This material should be approached with an open mind and critically considered. In no sense should what you are about to read be considered a theory, as theories are based on data and observation while religious beliefs are taken as articles of faith. While many claim that this book is the literal word of God, no evidence for divine authorship exists. It should be understood that Christianity is only one of hundreds of religions that exist today, each of which proposes an alternative view of the universe. As each religion requires no proof other than faith, each can be viewed as equally valid and none may actually be correct.

14 Thoughts For The New Pope / Condoms. Female priests. Stop gay bashing. And dammit, do something about Christian rock 7) A related confession: I recently found myself sampling snippets of the new Kristin Chenowith album on iTMS, mostly because she's that cute little thing from "The West Wing" and she has that adorable mouse-on-helium voice and I wanted to see what she sang about and oh sweet Jesus this toxic CD totally decimates all thoughts of her cute likeability, and its numbing saccharine Jesus adoration makes you gag and sigh and wish she would discover the joys of a good Hitachi Magic Wand and a gallon of premium vodka. What is wrong with her? Why is music like this?
8) You know who Jesus would have liked? Pearl Jam. Nick Drake. Maybe some classic Deep Purple (for the badass organ). You know it's true.
