Arafat's Trustworthiness Questioned. After another bombing in Israel, the White House questioned Yasser Arafat's trustworthiness Wednesday and pledged to increase contacts with a new generation of Palestinian leaders who may be more willing to curb terrorism. [AP World News]
"In the president's eyes, Yasser Arafat has never played a role of someone who could be trusted or who was effective," White House press secretary Ari Fleischer (news - web sites) said.
It seems President Bush has at least a loose grasp of the obvious. That may not seem like much, but it's a big improvement over previous administrations.

Whose property is it anyway?. Ilana Mercer at World Net Daily -
Whose property is it anyway? - if the American government still
respected private property, there would be no discussion of arming
pilots and no federally-funded really bad airport and airplane
security. Private airline companies would be free to contract for
their own security and people would be free to choose whether they
prefer Mr. Colt's security to being a helpless victim. [geneice] [End the War on Freedom]
Ms. Mercer's article certainly makes sense, but this and other articles like it make one oversight. They all assume that the government actually wants to improve security, when in fact everything the Feds have said and done for decades makes it clear that they actually want to maximize terrorists' chances of success.

Blogging Goes Legit, Sort Of. Blogging, a latter-day home page for some and a place to pretend you're a journalist for others, is now part of a major university's J-school curriculum. By Noah Shachtman. [Wired News]
I think the headline, and to a lesser extent the article, are rather insulting. The message here is that a method of communication is "illegitimate" until blessed by the "journalism school" priesthood.

NATO Considers Anti-Terror Overhaul. Several European allies have voiced support for plans to give NATO more flexible, rapid-reaction forces that can project power beyond the alliance's borders to far-flung regions harboring terrorists that threaten allied interests. [AP World News]
I'm not particularly comfortable with the idea of countries like France and Germany increasing their offensive capabilities. Obviously it's not up to us if they do, but we certainly shouldn't be encouraging them!

Israel Blows Up 3 Arafat Buildings. Israeli troops shelled Yasser Arafat's headquarters early Thursday, blew a hole in his bedroom wall and destroyed three buildings in the sprawling compound in response to a Palestinian suicide attack on an Israeli bus that killed 17 passengers. [AP World News]
Blowing up PLO buildings hasn't done much good so far. Instead of wasting ammunition, why not arrest or expel Arafat? Or better yet, just kill him?
