Be Inc. completes takeover of Palm.. The Register: Be Inc. completes takeover of Palm. [Hack the Planet]

The "takeover" in question is basically the same sort of thing that happened when NeXT, Inc. took over Apple. Hopefully the end result will be better for Palm.

A Treatise on Marxism-Leninism: Foreword and Chapter 1. Once upon a time there was no such thing as Communism. People ignorantly toiled and saved, hoping to get ahead like the heroes in Horatio Alger novels, which they forgot were fiction. Frequently, blinded by sentimentality, they left money to their loved ones. When this was done on a large scale, it led to the accumulation of huge fortunes, like those of Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford, which some harebrained member of a younger generation was sure to squander on public libraries and housing projects. Lacking vision, many were unable to see anything shameful about accepting the rewards of industry and thrift. Still worse, there were those who spelled the word State without a capital1. There were also those who believed in some sort of Deity, or at least had the uneasy feeling that there was something bigger than the Head Man. They did not know, until it was pointed out by Marx, that religion is the opium of the people and should be sold only on prescription. [kuro5hin.org]

This is a really funny, and rather unflattering, history of Karl Marx. It's pretty strange to see something like this on kuro5hin, a site dominated by communists. Communists are not noted for their sense of humour, and some of the comments below the story are also pretty funny.

Fabien Petitcolas: MP3 steganographic tool [Scripting News]

It's Windows-only, no Mac version. Still, it's a good idea.

Arafat: Bush Is Not Referring to Me. Yasser Arafat was asked Tuesday if he was the man in question when President Bush called for a change in the Palestinian leadership. [AP World News]

Apparently Arafat didn't offer any theory as to who else Bush might have been talking about.

That "housing inspector" person who attempted to invade my home in April just reappeared. He showed up knocking on my apartment door at 3:45 PM today, building owner in tow. Note that this is a time when I (or anyone else) would normally be at work--it was just a fortunate coincidence that I had to stay home from work today.

He asked me if I'd had time to think about letting him "inspect" my apartment, so I asked him if he'd had time to think about getting a warrant. He replied that "we don't like to get warrants, it makes things much harder for everybody." It's obvious that he doesn't like warrants, since he tried to circumvent the need for one by showing up when he thought I wouldn't be home.

I'm trying to contact the building owner about this. It's bad enough that he won't demand a warrant himself, but helping some government agent sneak in when I'm not home is intolerable.
