John Gilmore's suit over secret FAA regs in SF court on 1/17 [Politech]
My case against John Ashcroft, TSA, and various other agencies will have its first hearing at 9AM on January 17, 2003 in San Francisco. You-all are encouraged to attend if you're nearby. We'll be arguing about whether the case should be thrown out as invalid.
The government gave a whole bunch of reasons to dismiss the case. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it does get thrown out--after all, the whole idea of asking a government court to tell the government to stop oppressing people is a bit pointless.

Palestinians Urge End to Suicide Bombs [AP World News]
"The suicide bombings will not bring us peace, and confiscating of our liberty will not bring you security," Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said. "Let us together reject extremism in all its forms. Let us together choose the path of peaceful negotiations."
He said his statement was addressed to the Israeli public.
Perhaps he should consider addressing that statement to the people who are actually doing the suicide bombing.

Woolf denies 'charter for burglars'. The Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf clarifies his controversial sentencing guidelines insisting they will help to deter offenders. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]
His controversial guidelines issued last month reportedly advised trial judges that first-time, or even second-time, burglars should be spared prison and given community sentences.
Not being a socialist, I can't imagine how letting burglars go free will deter them from comitting more crimes. But then, I suppose it's moot if the police don't bother arresting burglars in the first place.
