Codesal, president of the referee commission of FIFA, says that since only Italy has complained of bad calls that is statistical unimportant. Leaving aside the fact that other teams have complained (eg., Turkey). Clearly, he is not a mathematician, I am so here it goes. Codesal admitted to 5 or 6 mistakes by referees in 56 games at least 3 of which happened in one of the 4 games Italy played. The probability of a mistake in one game is 6/56. The probability in three games is (6/56)^3, the probability of a mistake in 3 of 4 games (the ones Italy played) is 4*(6/56)^3, or approximated 0.005 a proof of randomness would clearly show the result (3/4) can not be produced at random... Here it is mathematical proof something fishy is going on in FIFA, and Codesal is as responsible as major pirate Blatter and cow eyes Moreno.

OK, now what the fuck is is going on? [Scripting News]

A lot Dave, glad to have you back. We missed you. I didn't write you "well wishes", because of what's going on. In particular, the World Cu, sorry the US lost today. I hope Spain can beat Koreans tomorrow.

OS X Update, No Thanks for Now [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

I don't know from where Dan got the idea that there are problems with th e10.1.5 update. I've updated several machines, without a single problem, not even minor...

FIFA admits Byron Moreno was mistaken

Yeah, thanks, we knew that! But who is talking for FIFA, Edgardo Codesal Mendez, well remembered for the Germany-Argentina final in 1990. Codesal has made a lot of mistakes and the mistakes in this World Cup ultimately fall on him and the committee he presides.

Adobe, Macromedia to skip Macworld. It's one of the biggest events in the Macintosh world, but the two developers will be no-shows at next month's New York show. [CNET News.com]

This companies, together with Avid, have been loosing money since they started ignoring the Macintosh market with this kind of nonsense. Don't they know where their money comes from? No, they make the reasoning "There are a lot more PCs than Macs, so why bother?" This stupidity doesn't survive scrutiny. Most Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Avid uses are, and want to remain, mac use. They are just helping the competition, in some cases creating the competition from the void. Thanks guys, keep up the crummy job. I'm moving my company out of their products, right now.

Another injustice by the referees. This time the victim was the US. Not only a legitimate goal was disallowed, I think it was a goal, but if not there was a hand to avoid it, but most close calls went against the US, that means, to me, that there was something other than simple mistakes. In the game of Brazil I don't think the referee was against Brazil, there was only one questionable called, which was wrong and very bad for the spectacle as the best player in the field was thrown out for a minor foul. But in the case of the US, there were several close calls and an overwhelming majority went against the US.
Probably, FIFA wanted to avoid the possible rematch against Korea, which was a charged, sad showing for the home team, as was the game with the Italians, despite the better end result. But, at any rate, the dirty World Cup continues and every close call will come into question. Particularly bad is the game Spain-Korea, even a small perception of favoritism will definitely tarnished this, very bruised, World Cup and end Blatter's corrupt career of power.
We have seen a lot of criticism to teams (Italy, Germany, etc) that preserve the result at all costs and renounced to attack to avoid risks. This comes from people that do not understand football. Noticed that Brazil today preserved a minimal goal difference, but were not critized by anyone. The reason is that, on one hand, they did it very well, with ten men!, taking the ball to the opponents court, but not attacking and holding the ball close to their feet instead of going for long, speculative passes, and, on the other hand, they won!... The latter is a much more important reason. If the Germans win the World Cup playing as they did today, if they keep playing this way, I'll be happy if Brazil wins, they will be remember for their success, no matter what. After all, as my Argentinian friends like to say: In Football they play 11 men per side and Germany always wins...

Brazil wins the best game it has play in the World Cup, and the worst for England. I was wrong, the referee didn't help Brazil at all, actually he hurt them by taking out the best player of the game, Ronaldinho. How refreshing. If Brazil plays two more games like this, it wil be World Champion again and deservedly so.

Study: Open, closed source equally secure. A Cambridge computer scientist argues, in the ideal case, that proprietary-source programs should be as secure as those developed openly. [CNET News.com]

Talking about security, who cares about theoretical results? Remember the difference between theory and practice: In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In a practical setting, open source is more secure because is easier to analyze insecurities.
