The United States Supreme Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold the University
of Michigan Law School admissions policy. The court ruled 6-3 against
the U-M's undergraduate admissions policy. The decisions mean the
University may use race as a factor in its admissions policies, although
it must be a "narrowly tailored" use. [From e-True Blue, the U of Michigan Alumni Magazine]

(When) Will Linux Pass Apple On The Desktop? [Slashdot]
The prediction is that by this time Linux would have surpased Macs on the desktop. the problem is that they are looking for numbers in the wrong place. Sale figures and instalation polls will never say the truth. The reason is that most Linux Desktop users have Windows installed and they used that most of the time. There is an easy way to figure this out. Look at stats for websites. Most major, general audience, websites i have seen have pretty similar statistics. Windows Explorer has 80+%, Macs have between 10 and 15%, and then there is the rest... When Linux surpasses Macs in these measure I start believing this line of reasoning...

Safire gets it
Caracas, California. Voters of Venezuela and California have a lot in common. Both could end up upsetting the election of their chief executive, but that is where the similarities should end. By William Safire. [New York Times: Opinion]
He makes two small mistakes. First, he believes Chavez had to agree to the recall referendum, when it is actually in the constitution. The fact that there has to be an agreement just points to the murky state of laws in Venezuela. Second, he believes Chavez can run. That is not so, or, at the very least, is unclear. Of course, the chavistas want Chavez to run, as one of them put it to me: "We don't have anyone else who could be our candidate?", while the opposition refuses... No agreement on this yet. The opposition is so divided is not even funny. If Chavez wins the history of this period will be one where greedy bastards killed all hope for venezuelans.
