Talking about Linux on the desktop, ArsTechnica has an interesting Poll about OS use. In the current results (YMMV) we have Windows with 59%, Mac OS X with 27%, Linux with 11% and the rest with the rest. That's the breakdown for the Alpha Geeks who are more likely to install Linux, Will the market follow this pattern eventually?

Apple Hardware VP Defends Benchmarks.. Slashdot: Apple Hardware VP Defends Benchmarks. "To test the hardware alone, you must normalize the compiler out of the equation -- using the same version and similar settings..." But people don't buy hardware alone; they buy a system which includes compiled code, so the compiler does not matter. Apple's comparison may be fair in some scientific sense, but if they wanted a real-world test they would have compared G5/OS X/GCC against Intel/Windows/Visual Studio. [Hack the Planet]
No, because they were not comparing systems, they were comparing CPUs and to do that you have to try to take the system out of the equation. But wait, they did compare systems, for that they used not only Windows, but seriously developed and optimize programs like Photoshop or Mathematica... And the G5 System kicked the Wintel's butt. Anyone that thinks that Windows is faster than Linux in anything but benchmarks really knows nothing... I bet if they do the suggested test people will bitch about which version of Windows tehy should have used... Why do they care so much? simple answer.
