News -- See the Leonid Meteor Shower just before dawn on Tuesday?:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?W2E952C72
Comment -- Not likely. Weather forecast is for solid clouds. That's a shame.
We won't see a Leonid shower this strong again in our lifetimes.
News - Interesting but long article about animal welfare and eating meat:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?N17626C72
Comment - The author summarizes current thinking about animal welfare (and
"animal rights") and whether it is moral to eat other living creatures.
His conclusions: yes, it's moral to eat meat but it's immoral to make
animals unduly suffer in the process. He says "factory farming", especially
chicken and hog production, is cruel and painful to the animals. He suggests
only eating meat that was raised "free range" and humanely slaughtered.
I think about the morality of deer hunting when I'm shivering in the tree
stand (Brandon and I froze on Friday and did not see any bucks). Deer are
certainly "free range" and to my mind it's more humane to shoot a buck dead
than to have it be road kill on I-96.
All the hunters I know care very much about making a quick and painless
kill. And, since we've created this huge deer herd in Michigan, I think we
have a responsibility to manage it properly, which can only be done with
hunting. I do think we hunters should give some thought to supporting a
couple years of doe-only hunting as a way to thin out the herd. It's
certainly not humane to let all those does end up squashed by semis.
News - Scientists at Northwestern University discover unbreakable encryption
scheme: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-965957.html
Comment - The problem with algorithm-based encryption is that,
theoretically, you could break the encryption if you harnessed enough
computer power and you had enough time. But this new high-speed quantum
cryptography method can't be broken, even in theory. Now, engineers will try
and figure out how to make it practical for people to use.
News - Nice article about touring wineries in Napa Valley:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?N61926C72
Comment - The author's advice, not surprisingly, is to avoid the big
wineries that are crowded with tourists and instead try and find little,
out-of-the-way wineries.
It was fun to read this and recognize names of many wineries we have
visited. Makes me lonesome for California.
