News - Front page article in today's Wall Street Journal about Walter Shawlee and his "Slide Rule Universe" Web site: http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/sruniverse.html

Comment - The article says that collecting vintage slide rules is a big and profitable business.

When I was in high school (maybe Dave, too), there was no such thing as electronic calculators, let alone PCs. To do math and science calculations, you used trig tables from a math book and figured out everything by hand...or you used a slide rule, which is kind of like an analog calculator.

For us math and science geeks back then, it was the height of cool (at least to us) to have a fancy slide rule. There was something elegantly functional about the way it looked. It was a device with a purpose and it served that purpose very well. Of course, they are all obsolete now.

News - New York City and eastern seaboard dig out from blizzard: h ttp://www.washingtonpost.com

Comment - The Washington Post has a good slide show of photos. I'm sure glad it wasn't this weekend that we were scheduled for our trip to NYC!
