Big excitement - Tim and Julie Merchant, "Thompson" relatives from Grenola, Kansas (o.k. Grenola was a long time ago and now they live in Kansas City) came up for the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon.

We had wonderful time - what great relatives. We're among the lucky Alaskans - we actually had fun relatives come visit!

Julie wanted to know why we liked Alaska - why we're still here after 35 years. My answer is that Alaska is compelling. There's a driving force that's still raw after all these years - Alaska has a stunning and dangerous beauty. Smart, unique, and sometimes very difficult people live here. Plus we have very good restaurants! Everywhere else seems boring, tame, and way too populated.

Tim and Julie's Marathon Times - Tim would like to point out that there was a timing problem with his chip and he actually finished an hour earlier and was waiting for Julie when she finished:

We all had dinner at Sack's on Monday evening.

Here's Julie with the mystery Ski Boy hiding under a napkin:

Here's Mom looking rather fetching:

(I definitely had some washout issues with this picture.)

Tim and Julie and the Bear - don't they look cute!

Police fear wurst, halt Wienermobile near Pentagon:

MILWAUKEE - It's the most famous motorized sausage in the nation, but even the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile can't drive on a restricted road next to the Pentagon.
