Break out the Hawaiian shirts, flip flops, and sun tan lotion! It's warmed up to a whopping ten degrees above zero! Whoooowheeee!

So - two quick anecdotes on this weekend's cold snap:

  1. On Phil's side of town, the temperature dropped to 27 below resulting in frozen (but hopefully not burst) pipes at Manse de Phil.
  2. Peter's niece, Abby, lives in Fairbanks. She turned a whopping five years old this weekend. However, her 5th birthday party did not quite go off as planned. It was 48 below zero which is just not conducive to birthday parties. Poor Abby...

Well, Kerry cleans up big in Iowa. I think this is a good thing. Over the past month or two, I've started to experience severe unease on the Dean front. I think he would be eviscerated in the general election. Plus, he just seems like a loose cannon. Hence the resulting evisceration.

I heard a pundit put it best this evening: Dean was the candidate for 2003. He tapped into the broad anger against Bush. The other Dem's were just sort of sitting back and initially were totally blown away. It took awhile, but they finally incorporated the anger and dissatisfaction, moderated it a bit and then developed other broad messages.

So, at 10:30 PM last night I was comfortably ensconced in my nice warm bed and engrossed in the most excellent book, Rowing to Latitude. The Ski Boy and Clemmie were both quietly sawing logs next to me. And then what should I hear, but the sounds of heavy machinery - right outside our window! I zoomed to the window and got very excited - it was a front end loader from the city! And it was working on Mt. Castner!!! Oh boy!!! At last, we would be able to back out of the driveway without running a slalom course.

The whole scene seemed a little sureal. So I got my camera, ventured out on the deck in my p.j.'s and took a few pictures. I didn't last long - it was 15 below which is way too cold to be standing outside barefoot, in a t-shirt and shorts.

I think the front end loader looks like a Tonka Toy in this picture...
