It was a cold one today - the high never made it above two below zero. But, it is always so pretty when it's so cold. Today, the trees were coated in heavy white hoar frost and the sun dogs were out in force - they were fabulous.

And speaking of weird cold weather phenomena, for the past two nights our roof has been exploding. Tremendously loud bangs - like someone landed a mortar round on top of the Partnow Manse. Our theory is that the water from last week's rain storm didn't completely drain, became frozen, and is now really contracting and exploding. Sort of like frozen rivers or glacial ice. They make the same sorts of thunderous booms when their ice contracts and explodes.

Mortar rounds on the roof do not make for a good night's rest.

O.K. - I'm off now, to a GCI project party at Pete's Sushi. So, I need to go bundle up and head out the door.

Driving home this evening, I listened to the NPR review of William Shatner's new album, Has Been. My initial reaction was that the album was simply Too Weird For Words.

I've known about the album since it was released. And I also knew that it had received some surpringly good reviews. But I at the outset of the NPR review, I was just howling at the car radio. However, that being said, the album began to grow on me in a peverse way. It is not a slouchy effort - Shatner collaborated with Ben Folds and Nick Hornby. Featured artists include Joe Jackson and Aimee Mann.

So, as weird as the album is and the fact that it has to be heard to be believed, it's really kind of a pop cultural force that is well worth a listen.

Yesterday was the big day on the Apple Computer front - Steve Job's Macworld keynote address. The keynote is where all the new big products are announced.

For the past two months, I've eagerly awaited this keynote - I've been hoping for a G5 based powerbook - a very hot Mac laptop. However, no such luck. No announcements at all on the laptop front. sigh...

I think what I'll do is see if I can borrow Mom's powerbook for a few weeks. I want to test drive her powerbook in our Windows corporate environment. If I can get it to work reasonably well, then I'll hang tough on the laptop front until this summer - when rumor has it that a new G5 powerbook will be released.

If I can't get Mom's powerbook to work within Corporate America, then I'll go the Windows laptop route. sigh...
