The Ski Boy and I just got in from our monthly book club meeting - it certainly has been quite the weekend. I think he and I are pretty much social whirled out.

Anyhoo, tonight's bookclub was at Tim and Cat's house - they live up in Stuckagain Heights. For the non-Anchorage-ites in the crowd, Stuckagain is appropriately named. Way up on the wildernessy hillside. Gorgeous views of downtown Anchorage. One of my favorite areas in town.

This month's book was Perfume: The Story of a Murder by Patrick Suskind. Quite the dark little existentialist fable. We had a rousing discussion. And we finished up by debating the difference between guilt and regret (a topic in this month's Tricycle).

And all the while we were munching on a great potluck dinner, slurping good red wine and finishing off with homemade chocolate chip cookies. Pretty much perfect!

For the past several weeks, I've looked out our windows and watched skaters having a total blast on Westchester Lagoon. I've been somewhat underpowered on the energy front and just haven't gotten it together to get out there on the ice.

But today, I rallied (after a two hour nap!) grabbed my skates, slipped into my Sorels and did the ten minute scuff to the other side of the Lagoon, pulled on my skates and ventured out on to the ice for the first time in three years!!!!

Yipee!!!!!

And amazingly, for someone who hasn't stood upright on a pair of skates since 2002, I wasn't bad at all. I still have a reasonably good powerstroke and can do somewhat quick crossovers. However, I am beyond wobbly as soon as the ice gets rough - always an issue on outdoor ice. I didn't fall. But I tetered and tottered over several bumpy pockmarked patches.

What fun! I don't think resuming my hockey career is in my near term future. But it sure was nifty to be outside with all the other skaters!!!

And now I'm going to have a hot toddy and rest my tired legs and feet!
