The Ski Boy and I dined at the Moose's Tooth this evening - afterall, nothing beats fabulous beer and pizza.
Seated right next to us, was my co-worker and pal, Mark Moderow. We invited Mark to join us - he was dining solo. But he reluctantly declined. He was deep into a spreadsheet - a very interesting spreadsheet. It had a column for every Iditarod checkpoint. The rows corresponded to various items such as dogfood, dog booties, human food, etc. He was planning out the checkpoint drop lists for his wife Debbie who is running her second Iditarod. Mark ran last year and finished! His finisher's belt buckle is the neatest thing in the whole world. Three years ago, Mark's son Andy finished in the top 20 and was the second highest rookie finisher. So mushing is definitely in their genetics.
The drops have to be ready to go by February 15th so they can be flown out to the various checkpoints. So, when we left, Mark was well into his second beer and still fine tuning what needed to be dropped where.
Yet another example of why Alaska is such a great state. You walk into the Moose's Tooth for dinner and discover one of your buddies working out their wife's Iditarod drop logistics.
