Peter and I just got in from the David Krakauer performance. It was an absolutely kick ass concert. The program ran the gamut from Brahms to electrified klezmer. I adored Messian's Abyss of the Birds (composed while Messian was in a German concentration camp in WWII) - ethereal and arresting. Steve Reich's New York Counterpoint was so cool - and so great musically. Here's the program blurb:

Counterpoint, written in 1985, is a uniquely demanding work using only instrumental sounds for nine B-flat clarinets and 3 bass clarinets, usually performed with an existing tape of the tutti clarinets against which the solo part is played.
The last 30 minutes of the concert was devoted to klezmer. Suped up, incredible klezmer. As Peter said, "It's not your Aunt Sadie's klezmer". Krakauer's klezmer band is stunning - incredible musicianship.

I want to create a playlist of this concert. In exactly the order it was played.

Best concert of the year. Hands down.

A great article in today's Daily News on one of my favorite buddies - Tim Kelley. I've worked with Tim off and on for 15 years. He's an amazing guy - an former member of the US Ski Team, he now does just about anything and everything that involves the Alaska outdoors.

He was the one who got me into roller skiing as an off season x-c training technique. He and I also used to trade doggie hints and ideas. I love hearing his stories of his various exploits. My love it when I get him to tell me about skiing the Iditarod trail from Anchorage to Nome. What a guy.

And he's a total sweetheart!

This afternoon, the Ski Boy and I are headed off to the David Krakauer concert and then we scurry back here to the Partnow Manse in order to host bookclub at 6:30 PM. Whew...

I'm still somewhat underpowed as a result of my respiratory critter. So, today is definitely close to the Slat Rat redline.

It's been a gorgeous sunny winter weekend. It really pisses me off to still be sick. Just taking Clem for 10 minute walk seems to be a major undertaking. grrr...
