Earlier this week, I mentioned that a small black bear had moved into Government Hill and made himself right home. As it turns out, he was travelin' man and visited several other neighborhoods.
Because of his increasing suburban/urban proclivities, Fish and Game darted the bear and sent him up to Fairbanks. As it turns out, the bear is going to participate in a hibernation research project. Unfortunately, at the end of the study, the bear will be killed in order to obtain tissue samples. I wonder if the bear was given the opportunity to sign a consent form.
That being said, if the bear wasn't participating in the study, Fish and Game would have had to have shot him anyway - the bear was becoming too accustomed to people.
In today's cover story article, the Daily News, printed this very spiffy "where the bear was spotted" map. Government Hill is the neighborhood right above the Port in the upper right hand corner.
