Why bother?
I've said for years that companies may as well just shut down for the last two weeks of each year, because you can't get anything done when so many workers are on vacation. As the NYT confirms, having Christmas and New Years fall on Wednesdays makes the situation even worse--no real work will get done until January 6, 2003. As a business consultant once ominously pointed out, we'll already be 1.37% into the year by then!
On the other hand, for those of us who make no big deal of the "holidays," due to religion, work-ethic, or general bah-humbugginess, can get lots done with minimal interruption during this time. So it's a two-edged sword.
When Christmas Is a Wednesday, 2 Workweeks Can Evaporate. The week-or-so-long hiatus that normally takes place between the holidays has stretched into two weeks. By Elissa Gootman. [New York Times: Business]

STC Region 8 conference "postponed"
For the second time, the Region 8 conference has been postponed. It was most recently scheduled for January 12-14, 2003, in Las Vegas. Apparently there were far too few advance registrations, so the committee is aiming for next summer. Meanwhile, the Web site has been taken down, along with the links to the hotel, making refunds for those of us who registered problematic.
