One of the more troublesome aspects of the sessions at DUX 2005 was the requirement that each presenter give a brief—really brief, 5-7 minutes—presentation about the presenter's paper. Some folks did a fair job of preparing and presenting in the abbreviated format; some did a miserable job; some presented under protest. One of the suggestions to manage the challenge that I heard later on was to ban PowerPoint. We know that Edward Tufte considers PowerPoint to be evil (see his "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint"). Now here's a lovely explication of two very different presentation styles that might shed some light on the DUX presentation challenge:
Gates, Jobs, & the Zen aesthetic. . . I thought it would be useful to examine briefly the two contrasting visual approaches employed by Gates and Jobs in their presentations . . . [Presentation Zen]
So:
  • Keep it simple
  • Tell a story
