Speaking of volunteer positions, yes, it's true, I'm running for Vice President for Finance for SIGCHI. If you're a member, please consider voting for me, and my co-conspirators, Erika Orrick, Gerrit van der Veer, and Carolyn Gale. Ballots will probably go out in January.

Knowing full well that I ran the risk of being instantly recruited to volunteer for some position or another, I still joined UPA two weeks ago.

UPA has initiated an online journl for usability:

Online International Journal of Usability Studies. "(...) a peer-reviewed, international, online publication dedicated to promote and enhance the practice, research, and education of usability engineering. Its aim is to provide usability practitioners and researchers with a forum to share: empirical findings, usability case studies (research case studies, not business case studies), opinions and experiences (regarding the practice and education of usability engineering), and reports of good practices in usability engineering." Happily for the cause of cross-organizational cooperation, the JUS was announced yesterday on not one but two SIGCHI mailing lists (that I know of. . .).

and not enough dancing.

Nick Finck has a few words about all the churn over professional titles and our various UX organizations and roles. I like the quotation from Christina Wodtke about "shut up and dance," but buried down in the comments is a better analogy (again, from Nick) about making and eating salsa. There are many cooks and many recipes, but the proof is in the salsa (and let's not get started about salsa dancing!)
