Now here's a problem just begging for intervention by the U.S. Congress:

Y2K06 Problems?. This could be trouble: The Leap Second.

A positive leap second is to be introduced into the international time scale, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), at the end of December 2005.

Expect widespread computer failure, followed by widespread panic, leading to looting and terrorist attacks. More importantly, the Rapture Index will go bananas. [The J-Walk Blog]

After all, anyone who can seriously attempt to extract more daylight out of the days leading up to winter by mucking with daylight savings time should turn absolutely apoplectic at the prospect of having to add a second at the end of the year (at night, no less, when it's dark!) at the whim of some international body of godless scientists. It's downright un-American.
