That Was Plan B
 
With the tech journalism business in the crapper, it's reassuring to know that my skills as a business writer will always be in demand. Not. Reuters: "BusinessWeek and Forbes, among the world's most popular financial magazines, on Tuesday confirmed they have cut jobs to further reduce costs in the aftermath of a record advertising slump...Dow Jones & Co. Inc., publisher of the Wall Street Journal, on Monday said it was eliminating 230 jobs, or about 3 percent of its work force."
 
What Liddy Dole Is Not 
 
Jesse Helms, who has represented North Carolina in the Senate for thirty years. Dole is not a semi-reformed segregationist. I point this out not to damn Dole with faint praise, or even to slap at Jesse as he heads out the door, but to note a meaningful generational shift in our state Republican leadership. Helms was a creature of a cruder political era, and the race-baiting history he embodies (and which he never fully abandoned) deserves to be left behind.
