Early Morning Shower
The Leonid meteor shower was exciting but not overwhelming as viewed from the second fairway of a nearby golf course at 5:30 this morning. Greensboro throws a lot of light into the sky and the moon was very bright, so we saw only the real scorchers, but Elijah and Sydney were excited to be up and out at such an odd hour, and we stood on the frosty grass yelling "whoa" and "good one" for a while. Then we grabbed a final hour of semi-sleep before starting the school day at the regular time.

The Empire Strikes Back
The Tar Heels destroyed Penn State in their season opener. Last year's losing record was Carolina's first since the season before I was born, and that was back when the heavily medicated JFK was in the White House. It looks like we may have more than the Washington alumni society to enjoy this year. Late in Dean Smith's career, Carolina was saved by talented freshmen, but they were charged with maintaining a tradition, not rebuilding it. Matt Doherty doesn't have to take the Heels back to the Final Four this season to keep his job, but he does need to show improvement over the plodding and dispirited team he put on the floor last year. He's off to a good start.
